It seems that talking about her does not make any sense, because starting from 2015 and heading further, up to the present day, this game has become more and more active and numerous fanbase, which does not stop growing.
She hooked many with what was a rather strange JRPG, which not only can be passed without a single murder, but the game itself also pushes and encourages a more peaceful approach. It would seem a fairly simple idea, however, as practice has shown, Undertale really managed to delay, since it was able to become so famous.
Nevertheless, the main theme of this blog is a person who had a hand in creating such a sensational game, which, nevertheless, we will also have time to talk enough. Let me imagine – Toby Fox. I am glad to see everyone on a plot that has already been a fairly dusty-“The History of the Personality”, in which we are considering and plunging into the past of the developers, analyzing the creative path and game that came out from under their pen. ● Well, we have a mechanism, albeit not very complicated. The truth is completely empty, and in order for him to stir, you need to fill it with details. In this kind of retrospectives, it is always customary to start from the distant past developer. However, this time I will make the horse’s move and start a story not even with a person, but with a completely different game, which, at first glance, is in no way connected with our history, but do not rush to conclusions, gentlemen!
“EarthBound”-the old JRPG 1994, which tells about the boy Nessa, who wakes up because of the roar on the street and, getting out, finds a meteorite near his house. There, he meets a small intelligent insect named Bazz Bazz, who grows the fable that he is a traveler in time and wants to warn about the terrible danger that he is waiting in the future. And strangely enough, it is in Nessa that the insect notices the very hero that he must save everyone – this is what the whole plot begins. The story is worse than in Indian cinema, but you will make a big mistake if you perceive this theater of absurdity, because such a strange atmosphere was obviously done specially and this cannot be considered at all for the minus.
What is attractive in Earthbound is that it is not only funny and strange, but also sincere and emotional. She is able to cause you a variety of emotions, despite the fact that she looks like a strange game about Charlie Brown, released not under the brand.

And I would not talk about this game, if in the end she had not fallen into the hands of the very young Toby Fox that he was born on October 11, 1991 in the city of Manchester. It was through Earthbound that Toby originated an interest in video games and, for the most part, she taught him to read, since he was only four years old at that time. I would even say that she made him as he is at the moment, because he completely adopted the absurd (in a good sense) atmosphere and skillfully uses her in his projects and … perhaps even in life? Do not think, don’t insult! But throughout his career, the hero of my blog will make so many strange, but funny things (which we still have to reach), that otherwise it is simply not to describe.
It is also worth noting one detail, because a few more important points flow out of the love of “EarthBound”, namely, acquaintance with the fan set of the game-Starmen.Net, on which Toby hung for a long time under the nickname “Radiation”. Perhaps I can hardly describe this place somehow in more detail and eloquently than a “site dedicated to the game”, but in the heart of Toby it occupies a special place.
I was truly fascinated by this site, its individuality and its inhabitants and decided to try to create something that would impress people on it.

One way or another, now we have an important gear to understand how Toby met games and why he loved them. Nevertheless, we need another detail – but not related to games. If you even know a little about Toby Fox, then you probably heard that he is not rarely called a composer than a programmer. And this statement is not at all groundless, because already being in high school, he began to play musical instruments, namely, the piano and the pipe. Moreover, Toby spoke of himself as a self -taught, and his love for this business will be another six to us, which will launch the mechanism and show the whole story.
Of course, he also tried to understand the creation of games. So, for example, in 2000, Toby actively studied RPG Maker with his brothers, but in the end, it was hardly one of the “projects” was completed, and obviously nothing was posted on the Internet.
Well, 3 gears gathered together and gradually they started moving, but what’s next? The first attempts in development will become known very not soon, however, the hero of our blog did not lose time, now and then taking part in other projects as – who would have thought – the composer. He wrote music for a series of web comics “Homestuck”, created by Andrew Hassi and, it seems, had a pretty good relationship with Andrew himself. Perhaps, by the way, they simply agreed in tastes, because Homestuck was also partially inspired by Earthbound.
Based on this, we have a very good picture in which Toby in all demonstrates himself as a rather creative person who does not plan to stop. This is just a matter of time when such people have forces to create something much more, but, as a rule, some practice is always necessary for this. Not from the first time “Undertale” has become so polished that there are no critical mistakes inherent in newcomers in it? But not everything is so simple. Perhaps you did not know, but the first attempts in development began not with something separate, but with hings to the Earthbound so beloved by Fox. Toby was divided into all his works into a fan site, which was already mentioned earlier and yes, several such creations were done.
However, I will make a slight clarification, slightly moving away from chronology. We will immediately move on to something more interesting, namely, to Haku that was created in 2008. The name was given uncomplicated – “Earthbound Halloween Hack”. There are not so many khaki and they have a much less weight in history, because I will not linger on them. So there with Hallowuvin?
I think you are familiar with a feeling when you, developing in a particular area, experience an incredible Spanish shame, looking at the old, still raw first works. Toby also felt shame for his hack, however, it is impossible to miss him within the framework of our small retrospective, especially since at least visual resemblance to “Undertale” should be rushed into your eyes right away.
Fanatical theories are fun, but I feel embarrassed when someone pays attention to what I did when I was 16.

At the center of history is a bustle hunter that I received an order for the extermination of all evil spirits. And along the way you will really come across very creepy enemies. However, yes, they would still not be creepy, after all, the hack literally has a Hallowvin in the name. In terms of the mechanic, as it is not difficult to guess, the game still relied on the JRPG system, but it has become noticeably more difficult and largely due to problems with the balance sheet. The game as a whole looked much darker, therefore, perhaps, a more uncompromising atmosphere would be very to face, but I will not be too linger on the plot or gameplay for obvious reasons.
Gradually you find yourself in the final boss, which looks like a crumpled mesh from Yume Nikki. Before that, you already had to have time to overcome quite a few opponents and it seems as if the same thing should happen now, but your expectations, the enemy will ask you for mercy … before that, of course, not forgetting to blame all troubles and christen a brutal killer for money for the sake of money! And yet, mixed with these accusations, the boss asks the player to leave him alone. Nevertheless, the boss player cannot spare, despite all his requests.

The hack was very criticized, for the most part due to a strange balance. But it is worthwhile to draw out of all this an important reduction – even then Toby showed his whole creativity to create music in creating music, and if you still could collect your soul in a fist and go to the final boss, then in its second phase you will hear the extremely familiar composition … and I am sure that you will immediately learn “megalovania”, which was apparently so good that it was so good that it was so good that it was so good that it was so goodI migrated to Undertale, also playing on the final boss in one of the ways.
● When looking at the result in the person of Hak, nothing but “well, he had an idea” really and you can’t say. However, in fairness it is foolish to expect breakthrough successes from the pen of the pen, and even not in a separate game, but just a little hack. Fortunately, on this Toby clearly did not think to stop and soon, in 2012, he really caught fire with a desire to create his game. And for this he only needed to stumble upon the desired article on Wikipedia!
Once I accidentally read about arrays and realized that I could program the text system using them. Therefore, I decided to create a combat system using this text system, which, in turn, gave me a lot of ideas for the game. Then I decided to make a demo version-to see if people will like it and is it possible to create it in a non -ormal.

The combat system arose the first. I wanted to create a role -playing game in which you could make friends with all the bosses. Where the refusal of murder is a viable option. If you think about it, most role -playing games are endless festivals of murders … How many monsters you kill? And for what purpose? Everything naturally arose from this concept.

So far, these were just achievements, sketches and raw ideas, which gradually became over the details. In 2013, hoping to get some funding and, opening a kickstarter to create a game, Toby Fox suddenly collected 10 times more than originally planned-50.000 dollars instead of 5.000. By that time, he had accumulated enough of him and he had already managed to develop a small demo, which could be downloaded on the Page of Kikstarter. As it is not difficult to guess, this demo was adopted by people extremely warm. Probably, people were quite very interested in the opportunity to pass the game, without killing anyone, which sounds like something really unique.
By the way, remember Andrew Hassi, with whom Toby previously worked? Yes, it was worth holding him in his memory for some more time and not just like that, because Toby literally began to develop his game in his basement, no matter how funny it may sound!

Along the way, Toby continued to work on music in other people’s projects, but the rest of the time he used to realize his ideas. Over time, Toby Fox finally made the game – completely alone – dragging this overwhelming burden on his hump, following the path of the samurai. The hero of our time! Perhaps you thought that it was with these theses that I will scatter? But not quite so ..
I understand why people like to talk about Toby as a person, that he did a game alone, who won the hearts of millions of people. Firstly, it sounds loudly;secondly, it inspires;Thirdly, Toby-really well done and almost the whole development was really on it, the hump is trained and under the weight of the understail, he does not even tremble, but it seems to me that this is a little devalu to the efforts of other people, whose hump is an order of magnitude less, but that helped in certain aspects. So let’s at least indirectly figure out who did what and how.
For example, as I noticed, people do not often mention the theme of Chang, an independent animator and illustrator, which acted as an “Undertale” designer, which can be known to you from your work with Yotta studio. You can even meet her in the game itself, where it is literally depicted in the form of a dog with a bizarre character, which lives in a village of Temmy, which is full of exactly the same bizarre creatures.
So, and what, Sobsven, she was engaged in development? Well-oo-oo-ou: designer Logo, artist KAT-scenes, surrounding artist, animator, store artist, and artist Tylov. She is also responsible for some characters (for example, papaisurus, vegetative, Andine and others), and also illustrated beautiful frames on the sides for console versions of the game, since the game has a permit of the square window and leave black stripes on the sides-somehow badly. And a little later, after the release of “Undertale”, the subject will completely develop a couple of small games, where Toby also took part as a composer. But not everyone mentions this either. However, then a slightly different story.

One of the reasons I wanted to create Undertale was to express myself and prove my abilities. However, working yourself, you are limited by your own capabilities. In addition, the development of all aspects of the game takes a lot of time. Therefore, I hired such artists as the topic of Chang, so that they help me draw some drawings. Do not feel obligated to do everything 100% on your own. It only complicates your life.

The Chang Temm will also take part in the development of another Toby Fox game. And even more than that, again running a little forward, when “Undertale” suddenly decides to transfer to Nintendo Switch – they will draw a wonderful animation for the trailer, which demonstrates a new boss, which can be found in the game.
In addition to this … gigi d.G., Chess, Clairevoire – Testers, but also helped with arts. Merrigo is the main artist of the background. Flashygoodness-many, many others, whose names, are probably not talked about in programming.
Even Andrew Hassi himself, perhaps, can be pulled as a potential assistant, because … he did not drive Toby and allowed him to work in his basement. Okay, it sounds funny. In fact, he even believed that the game got its name-“Undertale”,-it is because some of it was created in the ground.
In fact, yes, he literally spent a certain period of time for developing Undertale in my basement. I always believed that therefore he called his game that way.

I don’t even know if it is really worth discussing in detail what happened next, because everyone and everyone spoke about Undertale. A lot of passages, comics, covers, covers for covers and caverses on covers caver! If, by some miracle, all this passed you by-I don’t even know, to rejoice for you or sympathize, because I literally don’t know how to describe such a big and part of the game, even from a part, it was necessary to see it yourself.
It was created on the Gamemaker Studio engine. The story seems to be simple as two kopecks: once there were people and monsters for a long time, they arranged a war among themselves and, as a result, the latter were sealed in the dungeon with the help of a magic barrier. After the asexual child, which you are, climbs the mountain of Ebbot, falling into the abyss and is below, in the underground fairy tale. Obviously, your goal is to get out. Only now there are several ways to do this: 1 – just go according to the plot, allowing yourself to periodically beat small monsters, but watching the plot and without touching the key characters;2 – give this world to be mired in chaos and fear, killing everything and everything;3 – do not kill anyone at all and everywhere to show mercy.
However, how is mercy and murder at all? Let’s immediately clarify that “Undertale” is an RPG with step -by -step battles, but with a very strange mixture of “Bullet Hell” genres (yes, let’s blow me for the fact that this is not a bullet, but Shmap, that the cigarette has nothing to do with the BH and this is all this. Just know, for me all this – one field of berries, do not double the brain to me or yourself. Thank you!) The essence is quite simple – you dodge the attacks and when your move comes, you either attack the enemy in response, or start a conversation with it and use the mercy, bringing it to a state where the monster no longer wants to continue the battle. This is what the gameplay looks like, but I won’t talk about it anymore, because: firstly, I am still pursued by the feeling that almost everyone knows about gameplay at least indirectly;Secondly, earlier I already wrote a blog that I was completely dedicated to the gameplay part of “Undertale”, where we reasoned, how and why it works and vice versa, where it goes along. I ask all interested to the table!
You, in theory, have several ways that will lead to the end, but personally, I personally came to the thought that in the first time you might even do not even find out about other ways to pass the game and accidentally go ahead in the most cruel way. Either to forget a little and still accidentally kill someone, because … well, they usually play JRPG and you can’t get a habit so easily. However, the game carefully tries to convey to you that there are other ways to solve problems. You literally have a button that allows you to talk with your enemy and this mechanic has already been inspired by one of the parts of “Shin Megami Tensei”, where during the battle it was possible to scratch the tongues with the opponent in the same way. If you started playing “Undertale” immediately from the path of genocide – this is not your fault, because, again, you are so accustomed to JRPG, usually do not give variability in this regard. You just have to get rid of empty blanks, which, obviously, wish you all the bad and other alternatives to solve a problem. Toby bored it, and he himself loved when you can solve the problem without violence, as a result, deciding to go to the horse and making it so that you could talk, feel, fuel and make other indecent ones with every monster in order to disperse peacefully.
I would call it an experiment that is not a fact that it will pay off and justify expectations, but Toby wanted to make a game, which, first of all, would like him to like. And, following the concept that millions of deaths of monsters in other JRPG are rather meaningless (and if you can solve everything with a dialogue, there is still a chance to run into a fight, choosing the wrong answer option), he really made a game that you can go without murders – and this is more than an acceptable option.
True, in some points you have to think a little more, because it is not always obvious how to solve the problem peacefully. For example, at some point you will have to fight with one of the key characters that you want to stop you from the undertaking to get out of the dungeon and all that the path of pacifism taught you is not working. Usually, when the enemy can be spared after the dialogue – his name shines yellow, but in the case of this monster, the name is not only that does not change the color, but the conversations do not lead to anything, as if contradicting its own logic.
However, if you played carefully, you will probably remember that one frog somehow by chance said that someday you will have to spare the enemy who does not want it and whose name does not become yellow. And here it is precisely what you have to spit merry. The only problem is that many of this information can quite successfully forget, or not to give it special significance, which is why I do not rarely see that unsuspecting players, having failed to find solutions better, just kill a quite kind character. You will see in the future a couple more similar tricks and sometimes “Undertale” may seem very unobvious, but only until you begin to find fault with the details, or suddenly do not realize what to do.
It is difficult to say whether this is the fault of the game, because it seems to give enough information and hints to push the player to pacifism and also encouraging this, because at the end, where you play the uncompromising maniac, content least of all. I would even say that the path of genocide is much easier, despite the presence of two rather strong bosses there. Firstly, most of the monsters dies from one blow from your damage, and you have too many CP and protection to worry about death. And therefore, the path of a pacifist may seem much more complicated, because a peaceful decision spends much more time for which the enemy can restore you. However, this is not a shortage, but a feature, which Toby himself said:
Violence by nature is a universal solution in most games. So that pacifism is just as exciting, it should be more complicated.

In other games, usually a good path, on the contrary, is the lightest. On the other hand, but is it not enough reason to dance under the developer’s pipe simply because the game has a full neon signs of the level of “mercy – strength, genocide – grave”? Still, I am already a self-sufficient young suitcase, why would I allow me to indicate some game how to play it in it? But not everything is so simple ..
The characters that enter the battle with you have their own character that throughout the game, one way or another, develops. Toriel-a monster that meets you and wants to help-behaves like a caring mother who has already seen many children who have fallen into the dungeon and she knows very well that you only have to leave her territory-the monsters will certainly use this and try to harm the human soul, which is why she categorically refuses to let the child, considering that it would be better for him. Not a single human child got out of the dungeon alive.
And this already creates a certain conflict, because on the one hand, Toriel can understand: this is not another NPC parent from the standard JRPG, which sends his child to a dangerous adventure, where there is a chance to suffer or completely die. But on the other bell tower, your goal is to return home and you cannot afford to linger. And given the fact that throughout this path she was good with you, it really becomes more difficult to take up weapons, and accusations of cruelty do not sound like empty words spoken into the air in an absurd attempt to shame, it really can hurt.
Over time, you understand that the monsters are not so bad, and you somehow come to the fact that you do not want to kill anyone and do not want to kill anyone. Yes, now in the comments, of course, the only person in the world may be entered by the only worthy of life to write that they don’t feel sorry for Fuflo all these characters and none of them, but … I think that everyone needs to decide it for themselves than to rely on words and letters from the Internet. As the fanbaza shows, the murder of many characters was given with a rather great difficulty.
But besides the idea, the musical component was very much praised. Given the extensive experience of Toby Fox in creating music for other projects, it would be foolish to assume that the soundtrack of the game will be released by a bad or medium. Nevertheless, in my last blog, which I had already talked about earlier, we have already managed to discuss the topic of music in battles. However, no less voluminous surplus of water can be cranked with a discussion of the skeletons that play on locations and throughout our adventure, transfer from one mood to another. These are Snowdin’s cozy music and the shabterfoll’s melancholy motifs and the terrible notes of an abandoned laboratory, but … hardly my meager User will be able to choose words to properly describe all this competently, so why not listen to yourself?
A little later, the connections received during the Toby stay on the EarthBound fan site began to show all their strength. A couple of acquaintances from there in the end were able to create a site on which various kinds of merchants were sold, including on “Undertale”. Together with the release of the game, the album began to be sold in a beautiful cover with all the rest.
Things went very well, already at the end of 2015, that is, after 4-5 months, the game was sold at 500.000 copies, what can we say about the future, when the popularity of Undertale not only did not subside, but also continued to gain momentum? This came to the point that Toby was literally not ready for this and was afraid of this popularity.
I not only did not expect this level of popularity, but at first I was afraid of it. I did not want Undertale to be tedious or spoiled even before someone could play it. At first, I even tried to contact some flyers and asked them not to publish any content with the game. But it has become very popular. Even inevitable. At the peak of popularity “not to love the game” to many online fanatas seemed a serious sin. In response to these circumstances, others began to actively hate the game, creating an endless whirlwind of discussions … Like a blow of thunder for a small dog, all this attention annoyed me. And every time it seemed that it was quiet, something revived, for example, the GameFaqs contest, awarding ceremony, bizarre videos with theories, and so on. At times I wanted to have a way to suppress attention. I felt strange impotence. (And guilt due to stress, when the success of the game should be something that I am just delighted.)

Throughout, the fanbaza has reached such a thing as AU (alternative Universe), which literally told the story of the original game, but in every possible way converted by fans, changing the setting, characters, circumstances and much more. Perhaps a really interesting phenomenon, but it is obvious that there were people who did not like it. And before, I often saw how they write that Toby himself is against Au, that he does not like such a shnyaga, this creates unnecessary attention, for this reason, they are not needed and this is generally a mockery of the author.
I have not found confirmation of this anywhere, but now I dare to assume that people incorrectly interpreted the quote above, which was given above, because of which misunderstanding arose, and Toby’s fear to create excessive noise around the game perverted to hatred of fan of fan.
Nevertheless, you should not scold Toby for an excessive panic on the basis of a sharp take-off, you can still understand it and ultimately, despite the rather unusual ground for stress, Fox is obviously grateful to the fans for what the game reached. And she really achieved a lot, as a result, having received a lot of rewards.
At the same time, countless wonderful things took place. People told me that the game helped them survive a difficult period of life. Others told me that the game made them laugh, or cry, or say: “I want to be kinder”. Many young children told me that for the sake of this they want to create games or music. And at a personal level, thanks to its popularity, I was able to help myself and many people in my lives. (And, I hope, in the future, thanks to this, I can help many other people.)
So, ultimately, it’s good that the game has reached so many people, and I am very, very, very, very, very, very, very grateful to everyone who supported it, and to everyone who helped me make it to make it.

● Toby time, one way or another, did not lose. In 2017, he continued to make music for other projects, for example, HiveSwap, the game whose plot takes place in the Universe of the Homestuck web comics. But he did not stop working on himself. After such success, it would be a sin not to take the opportunity to make another game that will be better than the previous one, is it so? Work began on a new project that I saw the light on October 31, 2018 and was called “Deltarune”. And that’s what is strange ..
According to Toby, the game takes place in a different world, this is not a continuation of “Undertale” or Spinoff or something else from the same category. However, you can calmly stumble on the characters that are already familiar to you by the first game, which, apparently, now live on the surface. The plot begins literally with the fact that you, still playing for a person, go with Toriel to school and already there you are falling into a completely different strange world, in order to heroize and stop the fountains that create a bad garbage. However, let the characters “Undertale” do not take a direct participation in the plot of the game, the first time it breaks the brain.
Toby himself described a new game quite simply. He immediately told the fans that he was not hoping to repeat the success of “Undertale”, but he still wants to create something interesting and another that the players may like it. Very pessimistic and even then it was clear that Toby seemed to began to burn out, but you know that you should decrease the expectations a little, playing a new game. At least Fox himself wanted you to do this ..
However, I do not want to say this, because, as for me, Deltarune surpasses its older brother in everything and this applies to both stylistics and the presentation of the plot with gameplay. At a minimum, now the player at the disposal may have much more characters who perform different actions. Someone is treating, someone is Buffet, someone is trying to agree, or if you prefer to go expensive cruelty, everyone can attack and use different attacking abbers. That is, “Deltarune” now much more like JRPG, although it did not lose its bullet Helllovskoo or Shmapovsky, whoever, gameplay. Dotten by all were now encouraged, and if you are not evading all attacks, the number of your mana increases, and you can already use it for all kinds of spells.
Obviously, we will not burst out about the plot for a long time. Again there are 2 types of creatures that once lived in the world, but if earlier they were monsters and people, now it’s dark and bright. Only without jokes let’s. One way or another, the harmony between these species can be said, natural and simply necessary, because otherwise … In the course of the plot, in some places the so -called “dark fountains” will arise, similar to geysers and this is not good. Firstly, this can bring chaos to the world, and secondly, they give the form to the Dark Worlds. There should be only one such fountain in total. However, new. The existence of too much fountains should not be allowed in any case, because otherwise the world of the light and the world of the dark will be destroyed.
And the heroes from the prophecy will deal with this madness, which you and a couple of characters are that you will help you: Monster – Suzi and the Dark Prince – Ralse. You are all the same person – Chris. It is worth noting that the constant finding of these guys makes the game not only much more like JRPG, but also a funny narrative plan. Undertale was full of funny guys with whom I wanted to be friends, but they all either lived on one location, or simply periodically came across during the plot. Here you are literally offered to go through this adventure with them shoulder to shoulder.
In any case, there is another reason why I will not talk about the lore of the game in more detail. You can watch the development of Deltarune with your own eyes, because in fact, it is not yet finished. The game goes on the principle of episodes that go out once in half a million years, however, as has already been demonstrated, they bring content with them, be healthy and expectations, in general, pay off, although the development time is also increasing. Toby himself is even joking that the output of each episode will go a year later than the past … I hope this will remain just a joke.
